We have just proudly completed our Treebog up at The Crossing. This is a waterless, minimal intervention composting toilet. We will plant nutrient-hungry plants around the outside of the Treebog, and they will feed from the nutrients deposited inside! We have chosen willow and they will subsequently be a harvestable resource, as we plan to coppice it later in the year.

The loo is raised up on a platform, and the chamber below the toilet at ground level is where our compost collects. It is surrounded by screens of chicken wire and straw on all sides. This helps the composting process by absorbing some of the moisture and masks sights and smells.

We constructed a small basic shed on the platform, and on a whim decided to fix in a very large spare window running the full length of the shed! Now we have a loo with a view! But we have fitted a curtain for the use of those with more modesty!

Inside the shed Bo very cleverly constructed a bench for sitting on, a chute and a great toilet seat. A few finishing touches have made it very cosy.

There is no such thing our waste. Our poo and pee are such an incredible resource and it is our gift to return the nutrients within them back into the cycle of life.

What a tragedy that we defecate into precious drinking water, only to treat it with chemicals or pump it out to sea! Our treebog is returning these nutrients back to the soil and creating a harvestable, sustainable resource with in. All visitors to The Crossing on work days are welcome to use it, and of course the members of the Coop Co-op too!
