Last weekend on a frosty morning a group of enthusiastic people wielding shovels met up at The Crossing for our latest tree planting event. Earlier this year we began planting a Forest Garden, a garden of edible trees and plants that mimics the multi-layered nature of a forest. The Forest Garden is a community project and everyone is welcome to join in with the fun!
The seedlings were a mix of native trees and fruit trees and there were about 30 in total. The frost was heavy and the buckets thick with ice so we had to wait for the ground to thaw before the tree planting could begin! But there was plenty to be done beforehand, and so we got to work clearing the encroaching grass around the fruit trees that were planted earlier in the year, and also layering wood chip down over The Crossing’s new drive way.
A good turn out of over 15 helpers enjoyed a nice hot soup for lunch around the fire. It will be a few years before the trees produce fruit, but this is an investment for the future, a community effort in encouraging biodiversity and food security.
